This recording is a quick mix from an open-ended collaboration with artists David Rogers, ivon oates, Caitlin Copeland and myself to perform a sonic intervention at High Angle Battery on Portland.

We arrived on a cold, but bright sunny day and proceed to investigate the tunnels. Some rules had been put in place, one was that we were to take no instruments in with us except for our microphones and recorders. Second was that we were all to start recording at the same time. What you hear here is each of our tracks, synched together and overlaid with little editing.

Coordinates for High Angle Battery: 50.5581, -2.4334

These recordings were done on 15th October 2011 in a back garden in Lodmoor, Weymouth, while I was picking apples. Really it was not scrumping as I had the owners permission to be there, though they were not there at the time. Technically to qualify as true scrumping it has to involve climbing an orchard wall and taking apples without the owners consent.

This month I again had great difficulty in capturing the extremely peacefulness of this special place. Capturing the quietness is proving to be quite a challenge in these soundscapes.

The field recordings that make up this soundscape were recorded near to the village of Fleet that lies close to the lagoon of the same name. This area was made famous by the novel of smuggling by J. Meade Faulkner, “Moonfleet”. Beyond the Fleet is the famous bank of Chesil Beach where treacherous currents and a strong undertow (you can hear some pounding of the waves onto the beach in the distance in some recordings). Amongst the diverse range of animals, birds and plants, the Fleet is probably most famous as the home for swans and you will hear them feeding early on in the piece.
